Biggest Little Garden in Town

The purpose of this vegetable container garden project is to increase food production in New Westminster.

The first stage of this program is to provide the means for New Westminster residents living in apartments or townhouses to have access to home grown, fresh vegetables. These three tiered gardens are perfect for balconies or patios.  The raised beds also make it easy for people with mobility challenges to access.

Everything is FREE.  The containers, soil and plants will be provided.  We bring the gardens right to your home. The members of this program just need to provide the locations, water and appetites.
The following is a sample of the contract a Biggest Little Garden in town member will be asked to sign:Biggest Little Garden

As a member I understand that I will receive a 3-tierred cedar garden box container, soil and a variety of vegetable plants/seeds, tools and a handbook. I will care for the vegetable plants as they grow.

I will ensure the vegetables are eaten by either my family or friends or I will donate them to the food bank.  I promise that no food will be wasted.

Any food donated to the food bank is to be taken to "Plant-a-Row, Grow-a-Row" at St. Thomas More Collegiate, 7450 Twelfth Ave, Burnaby between 9:30 – 10:30 any Sunday morning.

I understand I am permitted to keep the containers from one year to the next as long as I am a member of the 'Biggest Little Garden in Town'.  If I become unable or unwilling to maintain the garden or continue to be a member, I will contact Fraserside at 604-522-3722 (117) and make arrangements to have the containers returned.

How is this for a Plan?

First - let’s get every person living in New Westminster having access to fresh, home-grown vegetables.

Then – (10 years from now?)   let’s have.…

  • vegetables growing in every nook and cranny in New Westminster
  • streets lined with veggie planters
  • every parking lot bordered with veggie planters
  • vegetables growing in parks, schools, alleys, courtyards
  • every public building (hospitals, libraries, community centres) surrounded by fruit trees.

Could New Westminster be world renowned for being the urban city that is bursting with fruits and vegetables?

I don’t know.

Do you want to try and see if we can do it?
